Jewelry Sales Up 9.9% at Malls
Mall sales increased 5.3% this holiday shopping season compared to the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas in 1997, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers.
Although warm temperatures kept consumers away from the stores earlier in December, a shopping rush beginning the Monday before Christmas fulfilled analysts' pre-season prophecy of a successful holiday. An additional shopping day and strong economy also contributed to high sales, says ICSC analyst Dr. John Konarski.
Jewelry was one of the strongest categories, with sales up 9.9% between Nov. 27 and Dec. 24. Cards, books and home furnishings also saw significant growth.
