Barker & Co. to Distribute Ekati Diamonds
Barker & Co. of Scottsdale, AZ, and Sirius Diamonds Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, announced a new partnership to distribute diamonds from Canada's Ekati mine in the U.S.
The North American origin of the diamonds will be a major marketing angle benefiting jewelers, said Bill Barker of Barker & Co. and Craig de Gruchy of Sirius. They announced the partnership at the AGTA GemFair in Tucson, AZ, this past weekend. The companies are testing logos to be lasered on the diamonds' girdles, which Barker and de Gruchy said will identify the diamonds as uniquely North American.
Diamonds from the partnership will be available later in February, and prices will be comparable to diamonds from other world sources, said Barker.
Sirius Diamonds Ltd. is a diamond-cutting operation designated a direct purchaser of diamonds from Broken Hills Proprietary's Ekati mine in Canada's Northwest Territories. The company is building a new cutting facility in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, which will employ and train local cutters.
