Fossil to Make Donna Karan Watches

Fashion house Donna Karan International Inc., known for its DKNY line of clothing and accessories, will create a line of timepieces with watch manufacturer Fossil Inc., Richardson, TX. The firms expect to sign an agreement in January and launch initial DKNY collections next spring priced from $85 to $250 retail. A higher-priced, Swiss-made line, the Donna Karan New York Collection, is expected to debut in fall 2001. Prices will average about $1,000.

The companies will distribute the watches in Donna Karan New York stores, select jewelry stores and department and specialty stores.

The agreement is the latest in a slew of marquee name watch licensing agreements. Last week Tommy Hilfiger signed with the Movado Group to make watches to debut in spring 2001. In addition, automaker Land Rover, London department store Harrods and U.S. lighter manufacturer Zippo each announced watch lines to debut this fall. Zippo of Bradford, PA, will make and design its own watches through contract rather than a licensed agreement.
