Jeweler Holds Live On-Line Auctions

Combining several technologies and media, an Ohio jeweler is holding regular live auctions of fine jewelry over the Internet.

Dicker & Dicker, a retailer and auction house in Beachwood, OH, holds about five auctions of estate and antique jewelry each year. People travel from all over the U.S. to attend the auctions, but the Internet has made it even easier for bidders to tune in to the events. Using Real Audio, an easy-to-use software program that receives live audio and video over the Internet, Dicker & Dicker broadcasts its auctions live on its Web site, www.DickerandDicker.com. Bidders can place bids using secure on-line registration or by calling a toll-free number.

Similar to the way home shopping channels use features and footage to entertain viewers, Dicker & Dicker keeps its Internet bidders interested by interviewing industry experts, including designers, appraisers and magazine editors, during the broadcast.

The next auction is this weekend, Aug. 7-8, starting at 10 a.m. both days. Among the featured industry members to be interviewed during the broadcast are Martin Rapaport; jewelry designers John Bagley and William Schraft; jade expert Don Kay of Mason Kay Inc., Denver, CO; and several trade magazine editors, diamond cutters and jewelry manufacturers.
