FedEx Beefing Up Security
Federal Express is installing scanning devices and digital monitoring equipment in selected shipping offices to help ward off package filching of jewelry and other high-cost items. The big shipper made the announcement during a meeting with officials of Jewelers Mutual Insurance Co., Neenah, WI. Transit theft in the U.S. exceeds $10 billion annually, says the FBI.
FedEx officials told JMI jewelers also need to do their part. FedEx says most of the losses occur when jewelers send merchandise in small jewelry boxes. Not only do the size and weight of the boxes indicate that jewelry is inside, thieves can easily conceal the boxes.
JMI advises jewelers to use a box at least as large as an adult shoe box, add weight to the box, add stuffing at both ends to disguise the contents and never use jewelry terms on the outside of the package.
