1949 Patek Philippe Watch Fetches $240,000

An 18k gold World Time wristwatch by Patek Philippe, circa 1949, was the top lot at Christie's sale of important watches and wristwatches this week in Geneva, Switzerland.

The watch, with a "La Terre" cloisonné enamel dial, fetched $239,392, according to Bloomberg News Service. The sale totaled $1.81 million. Of 371 lots offered, 317 found buyers.

"The wide variety of lots offered generated interest from a remarkable number of private collectors as well as trade from all over the world," said Sabine Kegel, head of the Geneva watch department at Christie's.
