Shots Fired in Robbery Attempt

A botched robbery attempt last week at Traditional Jewelers in Newport Beach's Fashion Island shopping mall left a store guard hospitalized and mall shoppers and employees shaken.

At about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, security guards for Traditional Jewelers spotted a group of men in olive green jackets and black masks crouched and headed for the store. The men screamed for everyone to get out of their way and began shooting, the Los Angeles Times reports. The store's guards shot back through the plate-glass store windows, and 20 to 30 rounds were fired between the security guards and the gunmen before the gunmen fled the scene. Customers and employees managed to get out of the line of fire, but one guard was shot once and taken to the hospital for treatment. Police say the wound is not life-threatening.

No one else was hurt, and the gunmen escaped with no property. Police are still searching for the suspects.
