Senators to Introduce Another Conflict Diamond Bill

The Campaign to Eliminate Conflict Diamonds, a coalition of 80 human-rights groups (see related article), announced today a new conflict diamond bill will be introduced in the Senate in early June. The bill will be sponsored by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Mike DeWine (R-OH) and is a companion bill to U.S. Rep. Tony Hall's (D-OH) Clean Diamonds Act (H.R. 918).

The coalition also announced it mailed information packets to 4,000 U.S. jewelers this week inviting them to join "Jewelers for Clean Diamond Imports," a campaign to gain support for Hall's bill (see related article). The information packets urge jewelers to visit and join the campaign. By doing so jewelers will have their names listed on the site and will receive a window sticker from the coalition.

In related news, World Vision, a human-rights group and member of the coalition, will continue to air TV commercials featuring actor/activist Martin Sheen advocating support for Hall's Clean Diamonds Act. World Vision Media Relations Manager Elaine Bole tells Professional Jeweler she won't say when or where future commercials will air, but says they will be in "targeted markets." Bole says they want to keep an element of surprise in its campaign. The group aired the first commercial May 16 after the season finale of "The West Wing," in the Washington, DC, market.
