MJSA Raises Money for Education, Publishes First Book

Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America raised thousands of dollars as more than 100 members of the jewelry industry came together at Ledgemont Country Club in Seekonk, MA, Aug. 6 for the second annual MJSA Education Foundation Golf Tournament. The fundraiser supported the foundation's industry training, school-to-career and scholarship programs.

"It's great to see this kind of turnout," says MJSA president and CEO James F. Marquart. "It shows that the industry recognizes that in order to remain viable and competitive in the global marketplace, they must invest in the next generation. The investment they've made through this event will come back to them as a dividend in the form of a strong, educated workforce."

In other news, MJSA/AJM Press, the new publishing division of MJSA, published its first book, "The Platinum Bench" by Jurgen J. Maerz. The book is based on the monthly AJM Magazine column of the same name and features techniques and tips for platinum repair and fabrication projects. The book also offers 17 step-by-step lessons with more than 200 photos to guide the way.

Author Maerz is director of technical education for Platinum Guild International-USA. He's worked in the industry since 1961. Maerz was the fourth jeweler in the U.S. to earn certification as a Jewelers of America® Certified Master Bench Jeweler™.
