Jewelry Duties Lifted on Imports from India

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative lifted duties on gold and platinum jewelry made in India, including pieces made with diamonds and other gemstones. The removal of duties became effective on Aug. 22, so jewelers with orders pending from Indian manufacturers shipped after this date will pay no duty. The ruling excludes silver jewelry.

"The lifting of the duty on jewelry adds significantly to the many advantages of doing business with Indian manufacturers," says Johanna Trotter, program director of the Indo-Argyle Diamond Council, in a letter to U.S. retailers. IADC promotes Indian-made diamond jewelry in the U.S. For more information, contact Trotter at (562) 490-9582, fax (562) 490-0645 or at iadc@mvimarketing.com.
