Some Jewelers Near WTC Are Safe

After checking in with several jewelry retailers in lower Manhattan, Professional Jeweler learned none of these businesses lost staff during Tuesday's World Trade Center attack. With the area currently evacuated, visits and phone calls aren't possible. However, a spokesman for William Barthman Jewelers, an historic building site on the corner of Broadway and Maiden Lane, just two blocks from the Center complex, said the store's employees are safe and the store remains intact. Barthman operates a second store in Brooklyn, NY.

Andrew Block, marketing director for New York-based specialty watch retailer Tourneau, reports all its World Trade Center-based employees escaped injury. Tourneau operated a Watch Gear store in the shopping complex at the now-collapsed Center. "Everyone in the store got out in time," he says. "That was our main concern. We're grateful that they are all OK. Everything else is immaterial."
