Sierra Leone's President Re-elected

President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah of Sierra Leone was declared the winner of an election landslide, reports Reuters. The election took place May 14. Kabbah won just over 70% of the votes and his party also secured a majority in the country's parliament.

Kabbah, who has been president of Sierra Leone since 1996, is widely credited by Sierra Leoneans with bringing the massive foreign intervention that ended the country's civil war. More than 17,000 United Nations troops have disarmed tens of thousands of rebels and militia fighters since the war ended last year.

The former rebels in Sierra Leone, who brutally maimed people during the last elections, came in fourth of the 12 parties contesting the election, not enough to win any seats in parliament.
