Fewer Shoppers Out With Only One Weekend Left

Only 43% of Christmas gift shoppers were out the weekend of Dec. 14-15, compared to 60% of shoppers on corresponding weekends in prior years, according to surveys conducted by America's Research Group, Charleston, SC. As well, only 45% of shoppers are finished or nearly finished their shopping.

The survey suggests that stores will be busy over the weekend of Dec. 21-22, since only 30% of shoppers said they planned to wait until the final few days before Christmas to finish their shoppiing. Shoppers told America's Research Group they feel pressured to get their Christmas gift-buying finished due to the shortened shopping season.

Service should continue to be a priority for smaller retailers, since one in five shoppers have gotten so fed up with the lack of store help they left stores without making purchases. The top five stores shopped the past weekend were Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target ,Sears and J.C. Penney.
