BaselWorld Says Goodbye to Zurich

BaselWorld, the international Swiss watch and jewelry show, announced July 9 it would find space in the city of Basel for its next show, to be held April 15-22, 2004. After only one year, the show is abandoning the "one show-two cities" concept that led it to place 800 exhibitors in Zurich during the 2003 show.

Returning to Basel will be the Hall of Universe, housing national pavilions of unbranded jewelry from about 25 countries. It had a bad start in Zurich in 2003, when the Swiss government banned nearly half the exhibitors from opening their pavilions due to fears about Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Basel management plans to use a new Hall 6 at the site of an existing warehouse complex, which lies within walking distance of the main exhibition halls. BaselWorld says that space is available to be developed for the show because of the economic climate. Halls 1 through 5 will remain where they were last year, segmented between branded watches and jewelry and related products.
