Jewelers Open Shop for Oscar Week

Jewelers who outfit the stars for the Academy Awards, to be held Feb. 29, headed west for the pre-Oscar week to display their wares, hold receptions and sponsor special events. Kwiat's diamond suite at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills will showcase the usual array of Oscar-worthy jewels, including such new styles as stiletto earrings. It's also is hosting one of the most talked-about and novel exhibits of the season – a series of diamond-rendered photographs of Hollywood icons by Vik Muniz, a conceptual artist. The icons, including Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor, are rendered in Kwiat diamonds, and Muniz will create a special gift portrait in Kwiat diamonds for this year's Best Actress winner. The limited-edition series, which features more than 500 carats of diamonds, will later be auctioned to benefit the Jewelers Charity Fund. Muniz, a Brazilian artist who uses a variety of unconventional materials to create his portraits and landscapes, has shown his work at the Guggenheim and Whitney museums in New York City as well as the Tate Gallery in London.

Over at the the PRB Public Relations showroom, also in Beverly Hills, the Italian Trade Commission is sponsoring 14 Italian designers' collections, "open to lend" to interested Academy Award attendees. The lines include Chimento, Damiani, Favero, Garavelli, Jarretiere, Marco Bicego, Orogami, Paolo Piovan, Pasquale Bruni, Pomellato, Roberto Coin, Staurino, Stefan Hafner and Valenti.

Among the jewelers opening their regular Beverly Hills salons to stylists and stars are Harry Winston, Bulgari, Chopard, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, David Orgell, Martin Katz, Judith Ripka, Erica Courtney and Neil Lane. Other jewelers with goods on offer at hotels include Daniel Swarovski and H. Stern at the Peninsula, the newly formed Natural Color Diamond Association at Le Meridien, David Yurman at LšErmitage, and Delaneau, Beaudry and Kathrine Baumann at Luxe. The Platinum Guild held its event last month at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Boucheron has set up temporary displays on the top floor of the Gucci salon.
