Sterling's Comp Sales Rise

Sterling Jewelers, the U.S. division of United Kingdom-based Signet Group, announced first quarter comparable store sales were up significantly. The 9.5% increase was higher than the total Signet Group's comp store sales, which were up 8.7%. The quarter encompassed the selling period from Feb 1-May 1.

The strong sales this quarter benefited by comparison to soft sales in the first quarter of last year, the company said in a prepared release. Sales were also buoyed by an exceptionally good performance over the Valentine's Day period, notes Terry Burman, group chief executive. At constant exchange rates, the group's total U.S. sales increased by 14.3%, while overall group sales increased by 11.5%.
