New Conference Debuts for Smaller Retailers

Thompson Merchandising & Supply, a distributor of retail supplies, will host the first TMS Retail Conference & Expo which organizers say is the largest event of its kind in the U.S., on May 18 and 19 at the Convention and Trade Center in Tacoma, WA. "Independent retailers and small chain owners face unique challenges, especially in today's competitive marketplace," notes Keith Lee, owner of Thompson Merchandising & Supply. "I wanted to do something thatıs never been done before – to organize the most progressive ideas and the most effective products and services into one event that is only geared to helping independents survive."

Independent retailers and regional retail chains, says Lee, are under increasing pressures from national chains, big box superstores, warehouse stores, category killers and the Internet. "[The conference] is designed to show independent retailers and regional retail chains not only how to survive in the shadow of the retail giants – but thrive."

The free event is open to any independent retail store owner or regional retail chain executive, with advance registration. During the TMS Conference, independent retail experts, including Barry Shamis, Debbie Allen, Dr. Paul Hartunian and Corey Rudl, will reveal new information about employee recruitment and retention, customer motivation and purchasing habits, guerilla public relations, and the online marketplace.

Highlighting the conference will be a keynote address on "Outrageous Advertising That Is Outrageously Effective" by marketer Bill Glazer, who is also a 30-year veteran of the independent retailing industry.

The first-of-its-kind TMS Expo will showcase thousands of products and services from more than 40 national suppliers of store fixtures, displays, packaging, security and price marking systems. In addition, "Ask the Experts" sessions will give conference participants advice on using cost-effective design, displays, and business systems to increase sales and boost profits.

Thompson Merchandising & Supply is a leading retail store distributor, with headquarters in Kent, WA, and facilities in Denver, CO, and Honolulu, HI. The first TMS Conference & Expo marks the company's 35th anniversary and celebrates its more than 25,000 customers nationwide.
