PGI-USA to Hold Platinum Day

Platinum Guild International-USA (PGI-USA) will hold its 13th annual Platinum Day Symposium on March 5 at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Platinum Day is devoted to education by top-ranking industry authorities in platinum design, manufacturing and distribution. This year's Platinum Day Symposium will address a range of issues including technical instruction, industry issues and sales-building tactics.

Th keynote multimedia presentation, "The Celebrity Impact on the Jewelry Industry," will open the program and will feature Carol Brodie-Gelles, global director of communications for Harry Winston; Leon Hall, fashion expert and cohost of E! Entertainment, Style Network and TV Guide TV fashion reviews of major awards shows including the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards; and Michael O'Connor, senior vice president of PGI-USA.

A track of programs devoted to platinum will run throughout the day offering overview information on the market and consumer demand for platinum jewelry and well as seminars directed at manufacturers and bench jewelers discussing new and innovative production and repair techniques including:

• Platinum Opportunity Overview: Featuring tips and tools to take advantage of the consumer demand for platinum and convert it to sales.

• Platinum Buyers Panel: Covering current platinum jewelry bridal and fashion trends.

• Seven Things to Avoid When Having Your Scrap Refined: Covers how platinum is recovered from scrap and seven tips on making the most of your potential returns.

• Platinum Summary: Alloys, Features and Benefits: Covering the features and benefits of platinum alloys and how they are best suited to various applications.

• Bench Techniques: Covering the most common platinum repair techniques and education on soldering and welding procedures.

• Innovative Platinum Casting Process: Teaching a new patented casting method that applies to a multitude of casting applications and metals, and reducing porosity.

Platinum Day will be held in collaboration with Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America and the Jeweler's Resource Bureau during the first annual Expo New York Jewelry Conference.
