Union Talks Resume at Ekati Mine

The mining company that owns the Ekati diamond mine in Canada's Northwest Territories, BHP Billiton, has agreed to accelerate contract discussions with the union representing its mine workers, avoiding an impending strike scheduled for this week, according to Bloomberg News.

The company agreed to return to the bargaining table April 5, moved up from the original plan to resume talks on April 18. Workers were threatening a strike after the union rejected a deal two weeks ago on the ground that it did not address major issues of concern involving equality among the mine's aboriginal workers.
